Investigation of the relationship between childhood trauma and guilt-shame feelings and self-esteem in karabük university students

Introduction and Objectives: Children who are associated with the default guilt-shame feelings can also be affected by self-esteem among emotional, social and psychological problems that may occur after childhood traumas. In this study, it was aimed to determine the relationship between childhood traumas of university students with guilt-shame feelings and self-esteem. Material and Method: The study was conducted in 2017-2018 academic year between the first undergraduate students of Karabük University Demir Çelik campus. The sample consisted of 400 young adult students. The data were collected using the demographic data form prepared by the researcher and the childhood trauma scale, guilt and shame scale, and the Coopermith self-esteem scale. Data were analyzed by Mann Whitney-U test and Kruskal Wallis variance analysis. Results: Cronbach alpha values were used to investigate the reliability of the scales. Students childhood trauma scale average score of 66.83, while guilt and shame sub scale of the size of the average the average score of 28.30 , 28.42 of the time. The average score of the Coopersmith self-esteem scale is 75.98.The childhood trauma scale, and a strong statistically significant positive relationship between guilt and shame Scale, Coopersmith self-esteem scale and childhood trauma scale, and the scale there was a strong correlation between guilt and shame in the negative direction with significant (p<.001). Conclusion: There was a significant positive correlation between the child's childhood trauma scale subscales and the guilt and shame scale scores. It was found that a person who had been traumatized in childhood increased feelings of guilt and shame in young adulthood. At the same time, a negative directional strong relationship was found between childhood trauma scale scores and the guilt and shame scale and the Coopersmith self esteem scale scores (R-808). In individuals who have not been traumatized or whose subsequent life has not been severely affected, it is observed that self-esteem is high.
