Medicinal plants that are effective in both hepatobiliary system and dyslipidemia

Abstract (EN)

Hepatobiliary diseases and dyslipidemia are two of the most common ailments in modern days and new ways of treatment are constantly investigated. Silybum marianum, Taraxacum officinale, Cynara scolymus, Curcuma longa, Allium sativum and Olea europaea are among the many medicinal plants that are beneficial in both. This information leads to a conjecture of shared machanisms of action for both dyslipidemia and hepatobiliary problems. In this thesis, medicinal plants were looked into for their effects on both hepatobiliary system and dyslipidemia. Scientific litrerature about anti-dyslimidemic actions of medicinal plants were screened and reviewed for their link to hepatobiliary effects. Medicinal plants could affect dyslipidemia by changing the absorption, transportation, synthesis, accumulation, catabolism and excretion of lipids. Their effects on hepatobiliary system could be due to antioxidant, antiinflamatory, cytoprotective, anti-steatotic, cholagogue and choleretic properties. Shared basis of these actions in both dyslipidemia and liver are regulation of genetic trancription factors and bile acid sythesis / secretion. In the experimental portion, Taraxacum officinale, Cynara scolymus ve Curcuma longa samples were purchased from three different spice shops in Kadıköy, Beşiktaş and Fatih. Macroscobic, microscobic, thin layer chromatogrophy, total ash and loss on drying analyses were carried out on these samples according to the monographs in European Pharmacopoeia. Taraxacum officinale and Cynara scolymus samples which were obtained in Fatih were not in accordance with their respective monographs.
