Abstract (EN)

The population registration system in the Ottoman Empire began to be established in the first years of the 19th century. The first census was made in 1831, considering only the male population. Thus, the first population registers were created as a tangible source about the population and ethnic structure of the Ottoman society. Thanks to these notebooks, relative information about the family structure, social relations of Muslim and non-Muslim elements and the place of individuals in society can be found. At this point, the population registers are an important source in terms of understanding the social structure of the Ottoman society and gaining an idea. In this study, two population registers belonging to the Karakuş township, which was known as Akkuş and which appeared to be connected to the Sivas province in the Ottoman administrative system, were examined. The related books were recorded with numbers 2282 and 2351. While the one with the number 2282 is dated 1246 (1831) Hijri, the other one with the number 2351 is dated 1259 (1844) by the Hijri. In the relevant books, detailed information about the male population of the accident, the descriptions of the registered persons, and the family and dynasty information were obtained. The study consists of two parts. In the first chapter, detailed information about the history and geographical structure of the Karakuş (Akkuş) accident is given. In the second part, the introduction and evaluation of the population registers numbered 2282 and 2351 were made. Information about the administrative structure of the villages of the Karakuş (Akkuş) district, the population age distribution of the villages and the physical characteristics of the registered persons are included in the related books. Thus, the social and cultural situation in the first half of the 19th century of Karakuş (Akkuş) district, which is connected to Ordu province today, has been tried to be clarified based on data.
