An investigation of leadership orientations of karate coaches

Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted to examine the leadership orientations of karate coaches according to certain variables. In this research, a descriptive method was used to reveal the current situation. The research consists of a single stage. In the first stage of the research, the leadership orientation levels of the participating karate trainers were determined. Whether or not the leadership orientations differ according to the variables of gender, age, education level, coaching level, coaching professional age, coaching nationality, monthly average income and coaching institution were evaluated with various statistical procedures. 219 karate trainers participated in the study. In the research, Bilgi Personal Information Form tarafından developed by the researcher and "Leadership Orientation Scale Bol developed by Bolman and Deal (1990) and adapted by Turkish Dereli (2003) were used as data collection tools. In the analysis of the data, frequency and percentage distributions describing the personal characteristics of the participants were extracted, arithmetic means and standard deviations of the responses to the scale were calculated and distributions related to leadership orientation levels were determined. Before the scale scores of the trainers were compared according to demographic variables, it was examined whether they showed normal distribution or not. As a result of the One Sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, it was found that the data did not show normal distribution. Therefore, non-parametric analyzes were used. The Mann Whitney U test was used to compare the scale scores according to the gender of the trainers, the status of being a national trainer and the type of club they worked, and the Kruskal Wallis H test was used to compare the scale scores according to age groups, educational backgrounds, coaching levels and coaching time. In all analyzes, the significance level was determined as p <0.05. According to the results of the research, the variation of gender variable and symbolic leadership, political leadership and total scores among the sub-dimensions of Leadership Tendency Scale in their region. Significant differences between age variable and leadership orientations sub-dimensions of political leadership, structural leadership, human-oriented leadership and total scores. One of the sub-dimensions of Leadership Orientation Scale is symbolic leadership and diversity of humanity in leadership. Significant difference only in the human-oriented leadership sub-dimension if coaching is related to the age of the profession. Significant differences between all sub-dimensions and total scores depending on coaching level, coaching nationality and monthly average income variables. As a result; It was concluded that the leadership orientations of karate coaches were affected by many variables.
