Investigation of fifty manuscripts bindings which has şemse decorations preserved in Kastamonu Manuscript Library

Manuscripts, when viewed from the point of view of Turkish Islamic arts, contain more than one art, they almost give a message and shed light on the present day as a mirror of the periods in which they took place. Today, there are many manuscript libraries in our country. The number of valuable works to be examined in many respects in these libraries is quite high. Some of them are currently preserved in the Kastamonu Manuscript Library. In this research, fifty embellished as shemsel book binding that we selected among the manuscripts preserved in Kastamonu Manuscript Library were examined in terms of decoration. In the first part of the study, brief information is given about the Turkish bookbinding art and the manuscript. In the second part, after the Kastamonu manuscript library is briefly mentioned, in the third part, the section on the examination of the selected şemse bookbindings takes place. In this section, the photographs of an upper and lower cover of the works, if there is the a short cover( mıklep) part and the drawings of these take place. In the fourth chapter, the method of the study is explained. The artistic works prepared by being inspired of the works were examined constitute the fifth part of the research. As a result of this study, it is striking that the cold printing technique was used in most of the works examined. In addition, undercutting is included in the thesis in the volumes made with the mulemma, mülevven,çarkuşe and yekşah method. We see that the motifs that are frequently preferred in the decoration of the bindings are herbal such as hatai and penç. Cloud designs are the second most preferred motifs in decoration, and then we can put rumili designs in the third place as the frequency of use. It was observed that the works were generally worn out. In some works, we see that the miklep part is detached. On the other hand, we see that the upper or lower deffe of some works are broken. Fifty works, which are the subject of my thesis, were included in the study with the catalog scanning method. The resulting findings are important in terms of understanding the Turkish bookbinding art and being an example for the studies to be done.
