The cost and spatial analysis of collection and transportation of solid waste: The case of Kutahya province, Turkey

Abstract (EN)

Waste problem has started in the early days of sedentism. With industrialization, population graowth and urbanzation it began to be a big problem to deal with. The necessity of sustainable solid waste management has grually increased due to negative effect on environment and human healt. The biggest cost item of solid waste management is collection and transportation of waste routes to minimizing costs. The other reason which makes waste problem more important is, Turkey's desire to expedite EU accession process with fitting EU Waste Instructions. The purpose of study is to analyze Kutahya's (which is running KUKAB Project with EU Funding Progremme) solid waste collection and transportation costs. In the light of 2014 data we analyze 13 districts's (including city center) costs. With reference to this calculations we use sptaial autocorrelation analysis. With the help of locational interaction and adjacency relations we present some geograpich visualisations and after that make ESDA and LISA spatial statistic technic. Studies are really few in numbers about solid waste costs analysis, which is a significant problem in Turkey in 21. century. Its an important issue that there was none solid waste analysis study using spatial autocorrelation. This study is substantial because of the contribution it makes to the literature. As a result of the conducted cost analysis it is observed that the reasons that increase the amount of solid waste, increase the cost of collecting and transportation of solid wastes. In the central districs where the population density is the highest, the cost of collecting and transportation of solid waste has been calculated to be high. For the cost of collecting per capita, the meaningfulness of spatial impacts were not found. For the cost of transportation per capita, in the districts Şaphane, Simav, Hisarcik and Gediz positive spatial autocorrelation has been found. Districts effect each other with adjacency relations in the way of increasing the cost of transportation per capita. It is concluded that, the cost reduction measures that will be taken in these districts might create an advantage in this region by creating an overflowing effect using the adjacency relation.
