Evalution of topical nepafenac treatment effect of kistoid macular edema following cataract surgery in patients

In our study we aimed to evaluate topical nepafenac 0,1% treatment effect of macular edema in patients undergoing uncomplicated cataract surgery with optical coherence tomography (OCT). Ninety eyes of 90 patients undergoing phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in Abant İzzet Baysal University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology between January 2013 and June 2011 were included in the study. In our study, three groups were performed as follows; Group 1: were used topical prednisolone acetate (Pred Forte®) 1% after surgery, Group 2: were used topical nepafenac (Nevanac®) 0,1% in addition to prednisolone acetate 1% treatment postoperatively, Group 3: were used nepafenac 0,1% treatment beginning 3 day preoperatively and continuing postoperatively. Patients were followed at 1, 3 and 6 weeks postoperatively. Central retinal thickness and macular volüme values of patients were recorded. The mean increase in macular volume measurements (central 1 mm and 3 mm macular volüme) were found lower in patients who received topical nepafenac (grup2 and 3) than in patiens who received standart steroid postoperatively. The difference in macular volume changes from baseline between group 2 and group 3 was not statistically significant (p>0,05). There was no statistically significant diffirence between increase in central retinal thickness all groups (p>0,05). An increase in macular thickness occurs after uncomplicated cataract surgery. In conclusion using topical nepafenac in addition to steroid reduce the odds of developing cystoid macular edema.
