Study on left ideology and labor movements in Cyprus

In this study, the general history of Cyprus until 1974 is examined and despite its strong connections with Turkey, a subject that has long has not been studied in academic literature is under scope; left and labour movement. Cypriots have throughout the history had poor working conditions and have lived as a part of colonial wheel by the ruling classes. Regardless of their race or religion, being victim of this order has empowered the bonds between these two nations and enabled a joint striving practice. Joint actions and strikes have been organized under the same roofs of political parties and unions. During this process, class movements have achieved remarkable results. However, as it goes on, the tension and conflict between these two nations and additionally the influence of the rising nationalism of the left-socialist parties disrupted this unity and a double-headed new labour movement has been established. Divided and torn, this new movement has lost its power and deterrence against the employers, regaining of which has not been the case. The labour class has been divided and weakend by the rising nationalism and war environment. Rising nationalism and emerging conflict environment have benefitted the capitalists who had the privilege of arbitruary governence against the divided and weakend labour class.
