"Hür Söz" Newspaper in Cyprus press 1946-1951 (Political, social, cultural life)

The island of Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean in terms of surface area and has attracted the attention of many states in the historical process due to its strategic location. In order to ensure the security of the southern borders, the administration of the island, which was conquered by the Ottomans in 1571, was left to the British in 1878. Britain, which took over the administration of the island, declared that it unilaterally included the island in British territory in 1914, and with the signing of the Lausanne Peace Treaty in 1923, the island was officially transferred to England. British rule came to an end when Britain gave independence to the island in 1960. The administration policies of the British administration on the island directly affected both the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots politically, socially and culturally. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the effects of the administration policies implemented by the British between 1946-1951 and the events that took place on the island on the political, social and cultural life of the Turkish Cypriot community, within the framework of the news in Hur Soz, one of the important newspapers of the Cypriot press. For this purpose, the news of the Hur Soz newspaper, which continued its broadcasting activities between 1946 and 1951, was analysed by dividing the news into political news, economy news, national security news, news about social problems, environmental news, war news, health news and education and cultural news. Inferences were made regarding the social, cultural and economic structure of the period. As a result of the research, it is seen that, after the administration of the island to the British, administrative policies were followed in which the rights of the Turks, who are in the minority status on the island, were ignored, and this situation caused the political, social and cultural problems of the Turkish people to deepen and remain unresolved. It is seen that the attacks and actions carried out by the Greek Cypriots in line with the ideas of enosis have increased the size of the problems experienced by the Turkish people. While in the first issues of Hur Soz newspaper, it is seen that political news aimed at defending the rights of Turkish Cypriots, announcing their problems to the whole world and keeping the national consciousness alive on the island were heavily covered, while it was seen that social, cultural and economic news were included in the issues published in 1950 and later.
