Impacts of Cyprus problem on Turkey – European Union relations

Cyprus is a region, which contains plenty of political, economic, domestic and foreign policies and shelters many other problems along with them, within triangle of European Union, Greece and Turkey. It has a two nationals structure with the Turkish in the north and Greek in the south. The deadlock/problems between these two nations put also Greece against Turkey or vice versa in regard to the reasons and solutions of the problems. A cycle of serial events, which had been developed in Cyprus island during the last fifty years, particularly the ideological objectives of Greece party in island, the claims of Greek over Cyprus, Enosis – Megali Idea opinions, the works, performed by Turkey for recognition of Turkish citizens' rights in international arena and political movements in the direction of acceptance of Turkish existence in the island, along with geopolitical and geostrategic importance of region have become a problem, which has always protected its popularity, between Turkey and Greece. A serial of plans (Founder Covenants, Amman Plan, A Serial of Ideas etc) have been tried to be applied in the direction of uniting the two nations by European Union and United Nations, but all have been failed since the parties haven't made any sacrifices from their benefits and strategies. The starting of discussions of Greek Populated Part of Cyprus with European Union in 1998 and their becoming a full member in 2004 while the problems have been still preserving their dynamism have made this matter more complicated. This complication has started a new period between Turkey – European relations. The membership status, granted to Greece Administration in the island despite of the fact that it is not possible from the angle of European Union Law of Nations, has caused a change in strategies of Turkey related to Cyprus and policies in regard to European Union.
