The Studies on Improvement of Fishing Efficiency of Monofilament Gill Nets Using in Keban Dam LakeThis study was carried out in 9550 hectares of fishing areas of fisheries cooperative society in the Çemişgezek region of Keban Dam Lake between January 2009 and December 2010.In this study, 12 pieces each 50 meter (total 600 meters in length) monofilament gill net with 40, 50 and 55 mm in mesh sizes were used. In order to increase the fishing efficiency by directing the economical fish to the nets, natural (corn, wheat, oil cakes and offal) and artificial (spoon, fish and worm-like) feeds were attached to the nets.The study was conducted during two fishing seasons. In the first season (January 2009-December 2009), total 519 fish (419 in bait attached nets and 100 in without bait nets) were caught. In the second season (January 2010-December 2010), total 510 fish (421 in bait attached nets and 89 in without bait nets) were caught.During the study, total 1029 fish were caught by 3 different mesh sized nets. At the end of the two fishing seasons, Capoeta trutta was the most caught species. The most number of Capoeta truttta was caught as 112 individuals in the nets with artificial baits and the least number of Capoeta trutta was caught as 16 individuals in the nets baited with offal.As economically, the fishing efficiency of gill nets were compared according to type of baits used and mesh size of nets.In conclusion, the use of baits increased the fishing efficiency of nets. This increase was found important statistically (p<0.05). The most number of fish was caught by artificially baited monofilament gill nets. The numbers of all fish species obtained were more in artificially baited monofilament gill nets compared with other nets.Key Words: Keban Dam Lake, Monofilament gill nets, Artificial bait, Natural bait, Efficiency.
