Abstract (EN)

The study area covers the Keban district, approximately 30 km west of Elazığ province in the Eastern Taurus Mountains, and a part of Baskil district in the southern part. Within the scope of this study, the locations to be measured in the region were determined, the units located in these locations were identified, and the data were evaluated with the kinematic analysis method by taking measurements from the fault and layer planes observed within the units. The aim here was to evaluate the tectonic evolution of the region covering the study area in the light of the obtained data, as well as to interpret the evolution of the Keban Thrust Fault observed within the study area according to the deformation stages. The oldest unit in the study area is the Early Cretaceous Keban Metamorphites. The unit was affected by intense tectonism. It was folded and metamorphosed with the closure of the Neotethys ocean in the Late Cretaceous. The Late Cretaceous Elazığ Magmatites and Sağdıçlar Formation are located on the unit. The relationship between Elazığ Magmatites and Keban Metamorphites around Ulupınar village is intrusive and tectonically contacted. On these, Early Paleocene aged Kuşçular Formation, Thanetian-Ypresian aged Seske Formation, Middle Eocene-Late Oligocene aged Kırkgeçit Formation and Pliocene-Quaternary aged alluviums are observed respectively. Elazığ Magmatites and Sağdıçları Formation are intrusive and tectonically contacted with Keban Metamorphites in the study area. As a result of the data analysis obtained from the fault groups, the deformation phases effective in the region; It occurred between Paleocene-Middle Eocene (60 my and 40-35 my), which is the oldest deformation phase in which NE-SW extensional regime is effective. The second deformation phase occurred between Late Eocene-Oligocene (40-35 my and 25 my) and a NW-SE directed compressional regime was effective. The third deformation phase occurred between Late Oligocene-Middle Miocene (25-11 my) and a NW-SE directed extensional regime was effective. The fourth deformation phase occurred between Middle Miocene-Pliocene (Serravallian) (11-3.5 my) and the region remained under the effect of approximately N-S compression. The last deformation phase occurred between Pliocene (3.5 my-present). Here, continental thickening gave way to strike-slip tectonics. Important strike-slip systems such as DAFS and NAFS became completely evident and remained under the effect of approximately NE-SW compression.
