Kececizade Mehmed Fuad Pasha (1815-1869)

Keçecizade Mehmed Fuad Paşa (1815 - 1869) is one of the famousstatesman of the Tanzimat era. Fuad Paşa first studied et Tıbbiye and thantransfering to diplomacy via the Translation Office had the opportunity to develop hisFrench in the meanwhile. Fuad Paşa who first met with Europe in1840 at his Office ofLondon Sefaret Katipliği later was the extraordinary ambassador at Spain andPortugal?s Capitals. After completion of these first duties of him with success andsurpressing the riot in Eflak- Boğdan in1848 solving the problem of the role of aproblem solver after these events showed the same succes at Yanya-Tirhala andLebanan-Syria. Carriying out both the military expedition and diplomatic relationswith succes presented important services to his state. Going to Egypt in themeanwhile and solving some problem including the application of Tanzimat,succeeded increasing the taxes and receiving extra income for the state.Accompanying Sultan Abdulaziz at his Egypt and Europe travels and carriying theburdens of these did his best to Project the credit of the padişah and the state.Fuad Paşa who was the minister of the foreign affairs 5 times and grandviziertwise was closely interested in the state?s economical situation and invalidatedbanknote. He was the head of Council of Tanzimat, Council of Judicial Regulationsand Supreme Council of Judicial Ordinances and in spite of being a civilian was alsothe commander-in-chief. He received the title of ?yaver-i ekrem? for the first timein Otoman history and received many other medals. He also dealt with administrativeregulationss such as; Principality Regulation, The Council of State gave greatimportance to education. He was a member of The Council of Knowledge andOtoman soceity of science and worked for opening of Darülfünun attended theconferences given there and was also one of the founders of Galatasaray Lycee.Accepted as ?one of the three pillars of Tanzimat? together with Mustafa ReşidPaşa and Ali Paşa and counted as Second Generation of Tanzimat together with AliPaşa had himself off mentioned with his statemanship, interesting personality andwit. The way he dressed, sitatues in his garden, parties he gave at his watersideresidence, the jokes he made with ease made him receive a lot of criticism yet hecould also respond these criticism with a theoritical expertise. While he representedthe new in Tanzimat he did whatever he could to protect the unity and integrity of thestate. Fuad Paşa who received the admiration of even the European with hisdiplomacy and intelligent responses drew the portrait of an interesting grand vizier inOttoman history.
