Retrospective investigation of cancer prevalence in dogs and cats

This study was carried out to evaluate prevalence and outcome of cancer in dogs and cats Data records of a total of 6 various veterinary clinics, located one in Ankara and 5 in Izmir, composed the study materials. Details of 2693 dogs and 1787 cats and pathology reposts of 130 dogs and 32 cats were used in the study. Cases recorded for 5 years duration from 2013 to 2017 were included in the evaluation purposes. At the end of the study, 2693 dogs and 1787 cats evaluated, the cancer rate was 4,83% in dogs and 7,1% in cats, respectively. The frequently observed cancer type was adenocarcinoma with 20% rate. In 32 cats the most often seen cancer type was fibrosarcoma in 7 cats (21.88%). When dogs having cancer grouped it was observed that 19 dogs were at the ages of 2-5 years (14,62%); 51 dogs at the ages of 6-9 years (39,23%); 60 dogs at the age of 10 years and over (46,62%). The mean age of dogs was 8,91 years. In feline group 15 cats at the 6-9 years of age (47,00%) was the most common cancer onserved group. In conclusion, it was observed that tumors in cats and dogs were significant medical issue and all tumor types showed increase with respect to age. Data generated here displayed similarity to previous studies however it was understood that some data could not be compared to current literatüre. Recording cancer cases in dogs and cats in Turkey, determination of cancer prevalance and incidence at nationwide scale by analyzing of records may provide valuable contribution
