Abstract (EN)
Entropion is a pathological condition frequently encountered in veterinary ophthalmology, characterized by the inward rotation of the eyelid margin. This multifactorial disease in cats can lead to serious complications on the ocular surface. Trichiasis and contact of periocular skin with the globe caused by entropion may result in secondary problems such as corneal irritation and ulcerations. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hyaluronic acid-based subdermal fillers in the treatment of entropion cases in cats. The research examined a total of 28 eyes from 20 cats presenting with entropion and epiphora. Following the application of hyaluronic acid-based subdermal fillers, follow-up examinations revealed significant improvement in eyelid position in the majority of cases, with considerable reduction in clinical signs such as corneal irritation and epiphora. The efficacy of the filler material continued during the follow-up examinations conducted at 1, 3, and 6 months post-application. A single application session was sufficient for most patients. In conclusion, the use of hyaluronic acid-based subdermal fillers in the treatment of entropion in cats offers a less invasive and effective alternative to traditional surgical methods. This approach may be preferred especially in elderly cats with anesthetic risks, cases with systemic diseases, and patients unable to tolerate surgical intervention due to its applicability under sedation, rapid recovery process, and low complication rate. Our study has demonstrated that hyaluronic acid-based subdermal filler application is a safe and effective method for treating entropion in cats, offering a new perspective in the management of entropion in veterinary ophthalmology practice
