Özet (EN)

INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF SOME LAXATIVES COMMONLY USED IN THE TREATMENT OF CONSTIPATION IN CATS ON CLINICAL, HEMATOLOGICAL, METABOLIC PROFILE AND BLOOD GAS PARAMETERS This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and metabolic effects of five commonly used laxatives (Psyllium, Docusate Sodium, Lactulose, Magnesium Sulfate, Sennoside-Bisacodyl) in the treatment of constipation in cats. A total of 40 cats were included in the study, with 30 cats in the constipation group (study group) and 10 healthy cats in the control group. Clinical examinations, hematological tests, serum biochemical analyses and blood gas measurements were performed. According to the results, in cats with constipation, WBC, RBC, HCT, and Hb levels were significantly higher (p<0.05) compared to the control group, while HCO₃⁻ and pH levels were significantly lower (p<0.05). While the use of Lactulose and Psyllium provided rapid improvement in clinical symptoms, it was concluded that Docusate Sodium, Magnesium Sulfate and Sennoside-Bisacodyl may have potential side effects in long-term use. The study found that Lactulose and Psyllium are safe and effective options, while other laxatives should be used short-term under veterinary supervision. Keywords: Cat, constipation, laxative, hematology, blood gases
