Comparison of the multidimentional perfectionism levels of adolecents who stutter and who do not stutter

Abstract (EN)

This study aimes to compare adolescents who stutter and who do not stutter based on their general level of perfectionism as well as dimensions of perfectionism such as Organization, Doubts About Actions, Concern Over Mistakes, Parental Expectations, Parental Criticism and Personal Standarts.The study group consists of 146 stuttering and non-stuttering adolescents ranging in age from 14 to 21. The stuttering group is composed of people who get services for their stuttering at Anadolu University Education, Research and Training Center for Speech and Language Pathology (DILKOM) and from speech and language pathologists in certain cities (Istanbul, Izmir, Kocaeli and Isparta). Stuttering adolescent students attending high schools in Eskisehir who were reachable and willing to participate in the study were also included. The control group is composed of adolescents chosen among students attending three different high schools in Eskisehir and students enrolled in Anadolu University who were willing to participate in the study.In this study, Turkish version of the Multidimentional Perfectionism Scale-MPS was used. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 16.0 package program. Independent-samples t-test and Mann Whitney-U test were used for analyses.The results showed that, adolescents who stutter scored higher on general perfectionism and all of the components of perfectionism except Parental Expectations. The differences were statistically significant for General Perfectionism and Concern Over Mistakes, Doubts About Actions and Organization components of perfectionism. On the other hand, no significant differences were found between the groups for the scores on Parental Criticism, Parental Expectations and Personal Standarts.KEY WORDS: stuttering, multidimentional perfectionism, adolescence
