The relationship between vocabulary and grammar level of seventh grade students and their writing skill

In this research, it is aimed to determine the relationship between the level of vocabulary and grammar in writing skills in seventh grade students. The research was carried out on a total of 515 students from six different schools in the city center of Diyarbakır in the spring term of 2016-2017 academic year. Relational screening model was used as method and Vocabulary Achievement Test, Grammar Achievement Test and Narrative Text Completion Form developed by the researcher were used as data collection tool. The texts written by the students were evaluated by four different scorers by using Narrative Text Rubric developed by the researcher. In the analysis of the obtained data; mean, t-test and one way variance analysis (ANOVA) from descriptive statistics; regression and correlation analysis from hypothesis tests were used. Data were analyzed using SPPS 21.0 data analysis program. As a result of the research, it was determined that the writing skills of seventh grade students participating in the research were medium-level. Furthermore, it was revealed that the students' writing skills showed significant differences according to the variables such as "gender, mother education status, father education status, book reading frequency, pre-school education and library at home". It is concluded that there is a positive and medium-level relationship between the written expression scores of the students and the grades of the Turkish course. Writing skills have a positive and significant relationship with vocabulary and grammar variables. When the relationship between variables and writing skill considered, it is determined that the strongest relation is vocabulary variable.
