An experimental study about developing of vibrato skill at the violin teaching (An example of Gazi University)

The aim of this study is to prepare the excersises about developing the violin students' vibrato skills, to introduce the differences experimental application is accomplished by using this exercises before the practice and after the practice and to find what kind of changes on the students' vibrato skills these exercises cause.In this study, both descriptive and experimental method were used. In this way, the quantitive and qualitative data were gathered separately, analyzed and as a result, the data gathered were put together.The focus of the study has formed the violin students at the branch of GÜGEF Music Teaching while its sample has formed N=20 violin students at the undergraduate second and third class.With the aim of researching the descriptive side of the study, literature was scanned in order to establish and to direct the subject. Besides, a survey was conducted with the aim of learning the students' opinions about vibrato and determining their problems concerning with vibrato. According to the results of the survey, the views about the problems at the vibrato training were determined, and vibrato at the violin training and the deficiences of vibrato teaching were indicated. In the light of the knowledge which was obtained during the literature scanning and the results of the survey, a background was established to prepare vibrato exercises which were going to be used in the experimental side of the study.In the experimental side of the study, the pattern with the pre test the post test control group was used. After an eight-week experimental period which was conducted by using vibrato exercises, pre-test and post test differences were compared. According to that model, data were analyzed using t-tests for paired samples and t-tests for independent samples. The numerical data were obeyed by using the vibrato evaluating scale which was prepared by the researcher so as to perform the statistical transactions.In addition, in the study, the computer measurements were performed with the aim of introducing the effectiveness of the experimental transaction. Vibratos' sound analyses belonging to the students in the experiment group were performed, vibrato frequency and vibrato wideness were measured, and the differences betwen the pre test and the post test were introduced.The results indicate that vibrato is an important factor and it is seen as a teachable skill; but, the applications about vibrato teaching are inadequate, the students make efforts to develop this skill on their own, they have problems in developing this skill, any exercises or any methods are not used to develop this skill and there is a deficiency of knowledge about this subject. In addition, the results which were obtained during the experimental side show that the students have more positive differences than they used to and vibrato frequency and vibrato wideness have more positive and more important differences during the post test than the pre test after the exercises about vibrato were performed.Key Words: Instrument Training, Violin Training, Vibrato, Vibrato Exercises, Sound Analysis.
