Determination of factors affecting depression, quality of life and nutrition and nutritional status in patients with bone marrow transplant

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to determine the factors affecting depression, quality of life and nutrition and nutritional status in bone marrow transplant patients. A total of 27 hematopoietic stem cell transplant patients, 18 male (66.7%) and 9 female (33.3%), aged 20-76 years were included in the study. Participants' general characteristics, health information, type of transplantation, nutritional habits, anthropometric measurements, 24-hour food consumption records before and after transplantation, biochemical parameters, malnutrition screening tests Nutritional Risk Score (NR2002), Patient-Oriented Subjective Global Assessment (PG- SGA), upper mid-arm circumference (UOCC), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BUS), European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30), pre-transplant and post-transplant symptom follow-up were evaluated. An increase in symptoms such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, mucositis/mouth sores, dysphagia, rapid satiety and loss of taste were observed after transplantation compared to pre-transplantation (p<0.05). The decrease observed in patients' daily energy, protein, fat,water, fiber, iron, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, manganese, B12, monounsaturated fat, polyunsaturated fat, fiber (soluble and insoluble) intakes after transplantation compared to pre-transplantation and the increase in percent carbohydrate intake was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). Percentage of daily intake of sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, iron and vitamin D before transplantation was higher in men than in women (p<0.005). After transplantation, only iron and vitamin D intake was found to be higher in men than in women (p<0.005). According to the NRS-2002 classification, pre-transplant nutrient intakes did not show a statistically significant difference (p>0.05). According to the correlation analysis, waist circumference (cm), hip circumference (cm), upper middle arm circumference (cm), body fat percentage (%), body lean tissue mass (kg), body mass index (kg/m²) and waist circumference No linear relationship was observed between the ratio of hip/hip circumference (cm) and Beck Hopelessness Scale Mean, EORTC Quality of Life Scale Functional Scoring (Symptom Scoring, Quality of Life Scale and General Health Scoring) (p>0.05). According to the regression analysis, a positive and weak linear relationship was found between the daily protein (g) intake before transplantation and BMI (kg/m²) (r=0.389; p=0.045). Determination of nutritional status, meeting daily needs and effective symptom follow-up, individual-specific nutrition planning affect the quality of life of individuals in the treatment process before and after transplantation.
