Evaluation of the effect of bone mineral density and body mass index on balance and functionality

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bone mineral density (BMD) and body mass index (BMI) on balance and functionality. The study included 102 individuals over the age of 18 years. Individuals were evaluated with Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), Body Mass Index, Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), Tecnobody Prokin Pk-252 Isokinetic Balance System, Tinetti Balance and Walking Test, Tandem Stance Test, Tandem Walking Test, Tinetti Fall Efficacy Scale, International Fall Efficacy Scale, 10 m Walking Test, Standing on One Leg Test and anthropometric measurements. Individuals were evaluated once with the tests and devices mentioned above. There was a significant relationship between BMD diagnosis and balance and functionality (p<0.05). There was a significant relationship between BMD diagnosis and only umbilicus-medial malleolus and sitting height measurements among anthropometric measurements (p<0.05). There was no significant relationship between BMI and balance and functionality (p>0.05). There was a significant relationship between BMI and anthropometric measurements (p<0.05). Our study revealed that BMD was associated with balance and functionality, but BMI was not associated with balance and functionality.
