The impact of do it yourself (DIY) design on Airbnb experiences: A phenomenological study on guest perceptions and preference criteria

The proliferation of short-term accommodation platforms such as Airbnb has led to significant changes in users spatial preferences and accommodation experiences. In this process, interior design has become one of the key factors shaping users' preferences and experiences. This thesis examines the impact of interior design on the user experience in high-rated Airbnb accommodations, particularly the role of DIY (Do It Yourself) applications—an alternative design approach—in shaping this experience and their place in user perception. The relationship between interior layout, visual aesthetics, user expectations, and experiences is also addressed in this context. The research was conducted in the Antalya region, which has high tourism potential and hosts a large number of Airbnb listings. Three different accommodation units with high user ratings were selected, and data was collected through listing visuals, user reviews, and semi structured face-to-face interviews with users who had stayed in these areas and the hosts. The qualitative data obtained through this method, selected in accordance with the phenomenological approach, was evaluated through thematic analysis. The findings show that the key factors influencing user preferences are aesthetics, comfort, and visual harmony. However, perceptions of DIY applications vary. While some participants found these applications original and authentic, others did not notice them or considered them insignificant. It has also been observed that these applications, which sometimes stand out in the space, can cause functionality issues due to amateur interventions. This study examines the impact of interior design and DIY elements in Airbnb accommodations on the user experience and discusses the visibility and importance of this approach in user perception. It also addresses Airbnb's position within traditional classifications as an alternative form of accommodation.
