Evaluation of urban climate and planning relationship in samples of Stuttgart and Hong Kong city

The climate information is an important criteria in the selection of settlements for people from past to present and therefore it has been a continuous subject of research. However, in recent years extreme weather events has received attention about the climatic information. In urban areas urban climate become different from regional climate, therefore it has started to be a subject in climate research and many disciplines become interested in the urban climate. Urban planning is one of these disciplines.In cities, determination the effects of planning and design in natural and built environment on the climatic conditions is an important issue for creating comfortable and livable places in cities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the academic studies about urban climate and to evaluate how the climate information has been involved to urban planning process and to introduce the processes and benefits of the use of the climate information for sustainable urban planning.For this purpose, studies in urban climate conducted between 1980-2010 years have been examined and approximately 1000 articles published in 66 periodicals and cited on the 'Web of Science' are classified in different topics according to the urban climate. Studies in the urban planning topic have been evaluated in detail for examining how urban climate information has been involved to urban planning process. Under the light of this evaluation it has seen that urban climate maps are important in this process. For determination the properties of urban climate maps and the effects of urban climate maps on urban planning process two examples Stuttgart (Germany) and Hong Kong (China) were selected. Through these two sample cities and their urban climate maps, the urban climate map preparation process, stakeholders in this process, relevant laws and standards, information and analyses used for this maps, urban climate recommendation maps and the effects of this maps on spatial planning and design have been evaluated and assessments were made regarding the use of urban climate in the urban planning.
