Lighting elements as street furniture- A key study from Boğaziçi

Within the context of the thesis ?Lighting Elements as Street Furniture?, technical and aesthetic features of lighting elements, generally used in pedestrian areas or roads, that are considered as street furniture by their functional features and by their visual contribution to the cities are analyzed and their effects to the city are evaluated.In the first chapter of the thesis; aim and context of the study are explained, in the second chapter; street furniture concept is described, effects of street furniture to the city are denoted, design process and parameters are evaluated. Moreover, the reasons why urban lighting elements are described as street furniture are explicated.In the third chapter of the study; urban lighting and urban lighting element descriptions are made and also historical development of urban lighting elements are analyzed.In the fourth chapter; the relation between urban design and lighting elements is evaluated, phases of lighting master plans are described and the features of urban lighting elements according to the design and urban usage areas are analyzed in detail.In the fourth chapter; the relation between urban design and lighting elements is evaluated, phases of lighting master plans are described and the features of urban lighting elements according to the design and urban usage areas are analyzed in detail.In the fifth part; technical features of lighting elements are analyzed in two main subjects; lighting technique and construction technique. Within the context of lighting technique, lighting method, light intensity distributions, light outputs etc. of lighting fixtures and also within the context of construction techniques, structure, conservation and material properties of lighting elements are explicated.In the last chapter, the European coast of Bosphorus is taken as a sample area and technical and aesthetic features of the present lighting elements are analyzed and evaluated by measurements and observations.Keywords: Lighting element, street furniture, urban lighting, urban design, the Bosphorus
