The role of city administrations in preventing city poverty: Ankara Greater Municipality example

Poverty and the problems of poverty are getting more intense as time goes on. Today?s cities, particularly the larger -the bigger- ones, seem as places where the poverty is getting more widespread and more diversified. In cooperation with some progresses, the problem of poverty became one of the major topics of both academicians and urban administrative units. In the first part of this study, it is tried to make the boundaries of poverty obvious by defining the terms ?poor? and ?poverty?. Some in formation about the definitions related to poverty within a conceptual framework has given in that study. Moreover, one of the focal point of the study, Urban Poverty, is argued out. In the second part of the study, after evaluating cities of Turkey with the problems of urbanizations and its indirect troubles, problems of poverty in Turkey analyzed in the framework of present statistics. In the same part, for the struggle of poverty, it is touched the fringes of the importance of social services and non -governmental organizations (NGO). After the information of the literature search in the first two parts, in the third and the final part of the study, basic actions that Ankara Metropolitan Municipality took for preventing urban poverty in Ankara are tired to be stated. In that subject, some sufficient acquirements are obtained by connecting related units of Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. By adding statistical data to those accessed ones, the subject has been clarified.
