Ecological urban transformations in the sustainability of cities

Abstract (EN)

In order to plan cities with ecological city approach and provide sustainability, the calculation and evaluation of Ecological Footprints of the cities are important resources. However Ecological Footprint evaluations are generally done specifically on countries. According to the current situation, Ecological Footprint contributions of the performed activities within cities remain unknown and over time increasing its Ecological Footprint making the cities less sustainable and taking them out of the shape of ecological cities. Whereas cities also have Ecological Footprint values such as countries. In this work which aims to cover the determination of Ecological Footprint of the cities, by taking Sakarya for years 2010 and 2018, every aspect that forms the Ecological Footprint has been determined and the footprint of each aspect has been calculated. According to this, both the total Ecological Footprint value and Ecological Footprint value per person living in Sakarya for two years has been calculated. The results show that the value of the total Ecological Footprint for 2010 values 1.125.856,026 gha and Ecological Footprint per person values 1,29 gha. Furthermore, the value of the total Ecological Footprint for 2018 values 1.226.490,173 gha and Ecological Footprint per person values 1,21 gha. Also within this period of time, both the aspects that form Ecological Footprints and the contribution of each aspects footprint to the Ecological Footprint has been determined. The obtained results within the working scope show that the aspect that increases the Ecological Footprint for Sakarya for both years is the consumption of fossil fuels and it also suggests that using alternative energy can reduce this value and contribute to sustainability allowing a better ecological city transformation.
