The change of the religious attitudes and behaviours during the urbanization process: Ankara sample

In this study, urbanization?s affects on religious attitudes andbehaviour have been examined empirically in Ankara?s two differenturbanization leveled districts in a comperative way.Urbanization does not only express a change process in social andeconomical structures, but also it includes the cultural change. In this point ofview urban life causes mass differences in traditional thought systems.Religion is one of the field in which these cultural changes can be seen.In the following study, it has found that the urbanization causes masschanges in religious thoughts, behaviours and practices. Although ingenerally religion has gone far away from social life in the urban space, itkeeps its existence in the individuals? private field. On the other hand bothreligious thought and modern-secular thought have lived together in theurban life.In the study sample, it has been fixed that the religious life which hasbeen lived in the low level urbanized district Mamak is more dense than thehigher level urbanized district Çankaya. But it has been observed that thereligious thoughts, behaviours and practices have not been completelyreplaced with secular attitudes and behaviour in Çankaya which hasdetemined as a higher urbanization level district. It has been seen that inÇankaya the religious thoughts have still kept to be the inclusive position inthe individuals mind even if it ihas been not as much as Mamak.In this study urban sociology and religion sociology?s basic conceptsare used. The key words of this study are; ?city?, ?urbanization?, ?religion? and?religiosity?.
