The causality of smoking and passive cigarate exposure and their effects on the quality of life in an urban district

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the casuality of smoking and passive smoking exposure and thier relationship with quality of life in adults aged 18-64 in an urban Family Health Center (FHC) district in Şehzadeler/Manisa. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, conducted in adults between the ages of 18-64 registered in an urban FHC district in Şehzadeler/Manisa. The population of the research consists of 6574 people aged 18-64 who are registered in an urban FHC region. The sample size was calculated as 434 with 95% confidence level, 5% deviation and 31% prevalence. The participation ratio of the study is 83.3%. Dependent variables of the research are smoking, passive cigarette smoke exposure, quality of life and smoking attitude and quitting behavior. Independent variables of the study are sociodemographic variables, health risks and anthropometric indicators, social relations, mood assessment, cigarette addiction level and other descriptive variables related to smoking. Findings: The mean age of the is 39.0 ± 11.8, and 67.7% are women. 47.9% of men and 29.3% of women has been smoking. In multivariate analyzes, men are 1.88 times (95GA: 1.08-3.29), working individuals are 1.92 (95GA: 1.12-3.30) times, those in the lower social class are 2.28 times (95GA: 1.19-4.37), and those who use alcohol are 11.21 times (95%: 5.43-23.11) smokes more. In this study, 43.5% of the people stated that they were exposed to cigarette smoke at home, 29.6% at work and 68.9% outside. In this study, actively working adults 2.06 times (95GA: 1.25-3.39), those in the lower social class 1.85 times (95%: 1.14-3.00) and alcohol users 2.57 times (95GA: 1.15-5.74) more exposes to cigarrette smoke. No relationship was found between smoking and quality of life (OR: 1.14% 95GA: 0.65-1.97) and passive cigarette smoke exposure and quality of life (OR: 0.52% 95GA: 0.04-6.73). Quality of life was found 3.94 times (95% CI: 1.56-9.94) worse in individuals with sleep problems and 9.20 times (95% CGA: 3.32-25.51) worse in individuals with depressive mood. Conclusion: Common variables that increases cigarette smoking and passive cigarette smoke exposure are working in an income-generating job and using alcohol. To reduce smoking and passive cigarette smoke exposure, community level cigarette checkings controls should be done more effectively, in collaboration with organizations such as Yeşilay (Green Crescent) and cooperate with occupational health and safety units.
