Spatial and social reflections of urban transformation:The case of Gaziantep Nuri Pazarbaşı neighborhood

In cities hosting more than half of the world's population, built environment production has accelerated in parallel with the population increase. The relationship between built environment production and capital has led to a social and spatial transformation. Particularly with the neo-liberal economic policies, the transnational circulation of capital has necessitated the continuous reproduction of urban space. The construction of the built environment in cities is intensified by urban transformation projects, resulting in gentrification and displacement. When the process of urbanization is taken into account in the context of capital and built environment production the shifting of the economic cycles by capital cycles has a great importance in the relationship between city and capital. In this context, this thesis aims to address urban transformation projects, which play an important role in the construction of the built environment in the urbanization process, in the context of society-space in Gaziantep. This research discusses the urban transformation project in Nuri Pazarbaşı neighborhood of Gaziantep with the dimensions of gentrification, displacement, spatial transformation, social transformation and rent. This study was conducted through in-depth interviews of qualitative research methods and data were obtained from Nuri Pazarbaşı neighborhood. The findings revealed that displacement and rent have emerged with the spatial transformation in Nuri Pazarbaşı neighborhood and that social transformation has taken place.
