The impact of urban development on the city silhouette; example of Trabzon/Boztepe

Urban population has increased in recent years and city skylines have been affected considerably. The purpose of this study is to explain how urban growth have affected to city silhouettes and urban identities in an aesthetic perspective over the years and propound the effects of future construction can be predicted in advance. For this purpose, the eastern, northern and western fronts of Boztepe, an important landmark of the city of Trabzon, and eastern, northern and western fronts seen from the sea, were examined using the entropy concept and gestalt principle, in which the aesthetic dimension of the 1900, 1950 and 2000 years can be qualified. As a result of this examination, the data for each year interval, the face and the principle is obtained. The data have been compared and examined how the values change over the years. As a comparison, the positive and negative impact of urban development on city silhouette has been qualified. It has been determined that the uncontrolled development of the given cities affected urban skylines in the negative direction. The effects of the new projects to be built are determined in advance and suggestions are made that the projects with negative effects should be revised or completely canceled.
