Abstract (EN)
This master's thesis aims to examine Sweden's migration policies and practices within the context of governance and urban rights. In this regard, the research question of the study is how Sweden's migration governance aligns with the principles of governance, what types of governance are included in migration policies and practices, and how this understanding of governance affects migrants' access to urban rights and their urban experiences. Sweden's long standing migration history has varied according to the specific conditions of different periods, as well as environmental, regional, and global circumstances, influencing the forms of Sweden's migration policies. Since the 2000s, Sweden has implemented migration governance practices involving central administration, local governments, the private sector, and NGO's from a methodological perspective. Although these policies and practices, which present periodic variations, appear to be inclusive, equitable, and sustainable in theory, they manifest in the field through issues such as migrant neighborhoods located away from city centers, overcrowded migrant housing, discrimination in employment, and everyday life. This study proposes a shift from individual centered methods that treat individuals as legal subjects to a dual approach that aims for coexistence and integration in urban settings through urban rights. This approach encompasses both migrants and citizens.
