Reading the han and passage passes in urban space organization: The case of Malatya city center

Cities are like living organisms that are constantly changing and transforming. This dynamic structure in cities is shaped according to economic, technological, social developments and human needs. With the 20th century, migration from the countryside to the cities started, and therefore, various problems arose with the rapid construction in the cities. Especially after 1950, the increasing urban population transformed the city center of Malatya into a common consumption space. As a result of this transformation, some parts of the city organization have developed positively, while some parts of the city have been left in the background. Intensified in the central business district (CBD) region in Malatya city center and generally used for trade, transition and socialization purposes; arcades, inns, arastas and bazaars are being converted or desired to be converted into shopping malls or multi-storey business centers with a demolition-build approach for various reasons. This change in the area has further increased the density of the business district, which is currently dense in terms of pedestrians and vehicles, and at the same time, it has severed the inn and passage connections between intermediate spaces and roads. For this reason, the use of intermediate spaces has decreased over time and they have lost their functions. Intermediate spaces whose potential is not fully understood have been left to their own devices and turned into isolated areas. In this context, the urban intermediate spaces, which are left in the background in the design and planning stages in Malatya City Center; It is aimed to determine its social and architectural value by determining its function in the current situation, its relationship with its immediate environment, its accessibility (Choice) and readability values. In line with the purpose of the study; Space syntax method and pedestrian counting method were used. As a result of the analyzes prepared, current situation analyzes were made and spatial-functional suggestions were presented for urban space organization and intermediate spaces. In the last section, by applying the space syntax method on the suggested maps, the increase values between the current situation and the proposed situation are discussed.
