Segregation of "other" in urban space: An experience of spatial segregation of LGBT identity in the sample of Cihangir

Segregation is an important phenomenon in the understanding of the dialectical relationship between space and social processes. In the neoliberal urbanization process, class structure of the capitalist space is reproduced containing the decomposition of different identity groups. Highlighting the differences in social life, there is a direct relationship between class structure and cultural and social capital, as a tool of identity, language, religion, ethnicity, gender etc. such as forms. This situation can be observed most clearly by gender, as a phenomenon of having functional position in the reproduction of class divisions. Historically and socially gender was constructed in heteronormative and patriarchal way, and as well as inclusion, exclusion and discrimination tool. Therefore, LGBTİ identities are an expression of exclusion and subaltern identity, as an opposition of heteronormative and patriarchal pattern. Segregation of the LGBTİ groups in urban space, may be a necessity in the face of the exclusionary and discriminatory practices of social life. Cihangir district has hosted different identities in the processes of historical and social transformation. Due to its marginalized view towards dominant lifestyle of society, Cihangir is a specifical otherness urban area historically. In the transformation of space through neoliberal policies, class and identity-based segregation of LGBT communities has been reproduced in Changir. In this context, it is an important sample for being observed a relationship between class structure of social and spatial segregation and exclusion and subaltern of identity. Class and cultural structure owned by Cihangir, has an distinctively acceptable level towards exclusion and discrimination of the uneven and social injustice urban life.
