The effect of the urban interventions to public space: Kâğıthane case

Different meanings have been attributed to the concept of public space by different disciplines. This situation arises from the fact that the concept of public space has a living structure that transforms over time. Therefore, a study about the public space should include an interdisciplinary perspective and the transformation of this concept in the historical process should be examined in a study. In this study, the concept of public space is evaluated with an approach which is at the intersection of sociology and planning-architecture disciplines. With the sociological approach, the transformation in social relations; with the planning approach, the transformation in the space have been evaluated together, without separating them from each other. In order to discuss the change in the concept of public space in the historical process, the concept of urban intervention was used as a second concept. The concept of urban intervention, which can have very different meanings similar to the concept of public space, has been limited in this study by restricting it to urban interventions made by the state through planning. In the first chapter of the study, approaches towards the concept of public space are included, and it is stated that the public space will be examined with sub-headings social relations and space. In the second chapter, firstly the concept of urban intervention is explained, and then the effect of urban interventions on the public space, its effect on social relations and its effect on space are discussed with different sub-headings. In the third chapter, a field study was made with an interdisciplinary approach and the subject was examined. In the third chapter, the urban interventions experienced by the Kâğıthane district of Istanbul, which constitutes the field, from the 18th century to the present are introduced. Afterwards, the spaces and social relations created by these interventions in Kâğıthane were discussed together. In the conclusion, the data obtained from the field study were discussed.
