11 BEHAVIOUR OF THE REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS STRENGTHENED FOR SHEAR UNDER REVERSAL LOADS (M. Sc. Thesis) Nazik KH. HASAN GAZİ UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 2001 ABSTRACT The most common technique used to provide additional shear strengthen reinforced concrete beams, which have inadequate shear reinforcement, is the use of exterior clamps. Although this clamping technique is widely used in practice, the effectiveness and its influence on the behavior and strength have not been investigated enough. The performance of strengthening technique of the beams by clamps under cyclical and reversal loads which is resemblance to seismic was experimentally researched. During the experiment program three elements of console beams have been tested. Results of the test were indicate the influence of the technique on strength, rigidity and ductility of beams. Test results prove that strengthening technique under cyclical and reversal loads is very effective. External clamps improve shear behavior thus lead to bending failure and control shear cracks.
