Abstract (EN)

Cherry is a sweet and nutritious fruit grown all over the world. Türkiye has an important place in world cherry production and export. However, many factors negatively affect the yield and quality of cherry production. The cherry fruit fly (Rhagoletis cerasi) is a serious pest that causes big damage to cherry production and quality in Türkiye, as in almost every part of the world. Besides the cultural measures and the use of sticky traps containing ammonium salt, chemicals are preferred for the control of this pest. However, the harm of chemicals to non-target organisms, the formation of chemical residues on the fruits, the resistance gained by insect pests against chemicals, and a problem in the viewpoint of organic cherry production led to a reconsideration of the chemicals. Biological control agents are an ideal alternative for controlling insect pests. Among biological pesticides, the place of entomopathogenic organisms (bacteria, fungi, nematodes, viruses, and protozoans) is undoubtedly the most important. The current study aims to enlighten the microbiome of the cherry fruit fly for the elimination or reduction of the damage caused by this pest on cherries. In line with this aim, a total of 317 cherry flies from certain stations were collected, total RNA was extracted from larvae and adults of the insect, and high-efficiency sequencing (HTS) technology and bioinformatics tools were used for the detection of the microbiome of cherry fruit fly. Data analysis indicated that the most abundant entomopathogens in cherry fruit flies are Pseudomonas fluorescens, Serratia entomophila, Serratia proteamaculans, Enterococcus gallinarum, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa as bacterial entomopathogens and also indicate other potential viral and fungal entomopathogens with less abundance. Classification of the cherry fruit fly microbiome regarding commensal, symbiotic, or entomopathogenic microorganisms was done by comparing it with information in the literature.
