Abstract (EN)

Kitsch has objectively succeeded in gaining a place within the framework of art since the time it came into existence and has continued to do so. It is difficult to describe it in precise sentences. However, it is possible to encounter different definitions in various perspectives and varying levels of appreciation. To define it according to its starting point, kitsch is a German-origin term that appeals to the general taste level and finds its counterpart in expressions such as corrupt, and vulgar. As it is perceived today, it is thought to have the power to overthrow any art style. Because kitsch is seen as objects produced with commercial concerns that sometimes feel copied and sometimes have an arrogant tone. The categorization of art as 'good' and 'bad' art fosters this distinction. Indeed, just like the relative situation here, kitsch assumes a relative identity according to the audience it belongs to. At the same time, its existence in all art disciplines makes it a part of not only art but also design and consumption in the field of graphic design since it requires creation and production by its nature. In this respect, although kitsch is distinguished from good art or good design, it is everywhere like "good" and "bad". This study aims to define the transformation of the kitsch into an object and its place in art and design with its identity, and to evaluate the aesthetic aspect of the typography element, which is reflected in the society in particular, in the graphic design discipline. In the first part of the thesis, kitsch is examined and defined in detail. In the second part, the definition and history of typography and also researches on the classification of fonts are included. In the third part, the problem of kitsch in typography applications is explained with examples. In the last part, on the basis of the consumption culture developed in the current century, the common discourses used in digital environments were discussed and typographic works were produced.
