Abstract (TR)
Political news comes first in the news hierarchy. General elections are one of the periods when political news increase in the new media. The public of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) as well as the press followed very closely the general election was held in June 24, 2018. Importance of this research is to look at the close relationship between Republic of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This study showed how TRNC’s press represented the General Election of 2018 in Turkey. In this research, six different newspaper with different ideological background have been investigated. These newspapers are Cyprus, Havadis, Yenidüzen, Afrika, Volkan and Star Kıbrıs. These newspapers have examined between June 14 arel June 26, 2018. They are examined 10 day before the election and 2 days after the election. Turkey has made election presidential and parliamentary elections took place on 24 June 2018 on the same day. It was the first time that the political parties entered into this by alliance. The parties were united under two separate groups alliance Under the name Republic Alliance and Nation Alliance, Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) participated independently. Local elections were held in Northern Cyprus on the same date. In this study, 195 election related news articles were examined by content and discourse analysis technique. The analysis revealed the ideological codes in which newspapers were presented to the election process and the political parties and party leaders involved in the process. The basic approaches [ideologies] of the newspapers regarding the political parties involved in the election process identified. In the study it was found out that Cyprus, Havadis, Yenidüzen and Africa showed an opposition attitude towards the Republican Alliance, especially the ruling party leader President Erdoğan. Among these newspapers, it was seen that Cyprus, Havadis and Africa supported the Nation Alliance . The Star Kıbrıs newspaper, on the other hand, has shown a supportive attitude towards the Republic Alliance. Volkan newspaper, on the other hand, showed an equal attitude towards both alliances. The only newspaper supporting the HDP was the African newspaper. The fact that the newspapers Volkan and Star Kıbrıs did not include any news about the HDP is understood as an solely ideological attitude.
