A retrospective analysis of pediatric patients operated in our clinic who are victims of Syrian civil war

Introduction and Aim; Syrian civil war caused a collapsed health system and patients started to pass the Turkish border and consulted to our hospital in order to get medical care. In this study, we aimed to analyse the operation causes and treatment choices of pediatric patients who were the victims of Syrian civil war. Materials and Methods;After obtaining the necessary permissions for our study, Syrian pediatric patients who were operated in our clinic between January 2012 to July 2015, were examined retrospectively from the file records. In our study age, gender, ethiology, operation region and reconstruction choices were identified. Results; Number of operated Syrian pediatric patients were determined as 73. 47 (64,3%) of these patients were male, 26 (35,7%) of them were female. Average age was 6,46. Syrian children mostly operated on congenital anomalies (44), secondly war wounds (25). The most common congenital anomaly was cleft lip deformity (17) and the most choiced reconstruction for this anomaly was the Millard method (16). Tissue defects due to blast effect (11) and thermal burns (11) were the most common cause of the war wounds. Conclusion;We established a wound care team in order to take care of increasing war wounds, both in our clinic and other clinics. Our team became experienced in getting through with pediatric patients who have both complex wound and tough physiology. The finding that stated the most common consulting reason was the congenital diseases, indicated that; in war, health problems would not only be limited by war wounds.
