Evaluation of the fracture cases in dogs referred to the surgery clinics

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study was to evaluate of fracture in 56 dogs referred to Clinic of Surgery, Afyonkarahisar University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine between 2001-2006.When etiologically evaluated, fracture etiology due to traffic accidents was the highest whereas fallen from height and hitting to animals with a firm object followed.Localization of the fracture were mostly accumulated on the femur ( n=23, %41,07) followed by tibia ( n=18, % 32,1), radius-ulna ( n=6, % 10,7), humerus (n=5, %8,9), pelvis ( n=5, % 8,9), mandible ( n=1, % 1,7), rib ( n=1, % 1,7), metacarpal bones (n=1, % 1,7) and phalanx ( n=1, % 1,7). Abundant callus in 5 cases, nonunion in 2 cases, pin migration in 2 cases, malunion in 1 case and infection in 1 case were observed.In conlusion, the most frequently fracture in dogs was observed in the femur and fractures were repeatedly seen as a result of traffic accident. In diaphyseal fracture in long bones, intramedullary fixation can be extensively used in the practice because of its low cost and easy applicaiton.Key words: Humerus, intramedullary fixation, fracture, dog, tibia
