Pelvic fractures in cats and dogs and their treatment options

This study was carried on 21 dogs and 19 cats with pelvic fractures (at sacroiliac region, ilium, ischium, pelvic floor and acetabulum) at the different breed, age, sex and body weights. In the study, operative and conservative methods were used to treatment of these cases that were brought to the Surgery Clinic of Aydın Adnan Menderes University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The study materials consist of 42 fractures that encountered on 21 dogs including 15 ilial body, 10 pelvic floor, 8 sacroiliac detachment, 4 ischium, 4 acetabulum and 1 ilial wing fracture, and 27 fractures that observed on 19 cats including 10 sacroiliac separation, 8 ilial body, 4 pelvic floor, 3 acetabulum and 2 ischium fractures. While these 24 of 42 fractures of the dogs involved in the study were treated with conservative methods, 18 of them were treated with operative methods. For the total 27 fractures of the cats examined in the study, 17 of them were treated with conservative methods, while operative methods were used on 10 of the fractures. In the operative treatments, intramedullary pins, plates, screws and cerclage wires of various diameters and sizes were utilized according to the type of fracture encountered in the study. Furthermore, the patients were re-evaluated clinically and radiographically in 1st,2nd, 4th and 16th weeks. Consequently, either the conservative treatments or the operative treatments that preferred as the treatment method resulted in functional healing in almost all case.
