Evaluation of asymmetric dimethyl arginine (ADMA) and oxidative stress parameters along with routine bio-markers in dogs with clinically normal body condition and obese dogs

Abstract (EN)
Obesity, which is a serious health problem for people and animals in recent years, is defined as having an ideal body weight of more than 15-20% and it is generally classified in dogs using by body condition scoring. It is known that dogs, who are found to be obese, suffer from various asymptomatic or symptomatic diseases simultaneously with obesity. These diseases cause changes in some blood parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the parameters of asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and oxidative stress [superoxide dismutase(SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase(CAT)] in addition to routine biomarkers in obese dogs and dogs with normal body condition. In our study, blood samples were taken from 40 dogs including 20 normal body conditioners and 20 obese individuals. These blood samples were evaluated in laboratory for hemogram and routine biochemical parameters. Apart from the routine biomarkers analyzed, ADMA and oxidative stress parameters were also evaluated. Some of the data obtained showed significant differences between obese and normal body condition dog groups. MCV (p = 0.036), MCH (p = 0.018), PLT (0.009) and MPV (p <0.001) from hematological parameters; biochemical parameters were ALB (p = 0,035), BUN (p <0,001), Ca (p = 0,010), CHOL (p = 0,006), TG (p = 0,027), ADMA (p <0,05) and oxidative stress parameters (SOD, p <0.001; MDA, p <0.001; CAT, p <0.001) in terms of dog groups were statistically different (p <0.05). As a result, it is thought that the interpretation of the levels of blood parameters may be useful in the evaluation, treatment or prevention of obesity and in other studies on obesity in dogs.
