Antibiotic susceptibility of klebsiella strains isolated from clinical specimens

Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates are a major causative agent of urinary system infections, upper respiratory tract infections and nosocomial infections. In our study, from urine, mucus, tracheal aspirates, catheter tip and wound samples, sended to Afyon Kocatepe University Medical Faculty Microbiology Department between February 2010 ? December 2010 from various clinics and from people with the risk of infection, totally 98 K. pneumoniae and 2 K.oxytoca are isolated and their resistance to some antibiotics and the number of strains producing Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamase (ESBL) is determined.Exaınined all strains are found to be resistant to ticarcillin (100%) and Piperacilline (92.5%).For Aminoglycoside antibiotics, GSBL producing strains, , were 2% resistance to Amikacine and GSBL producing strains were 58% resistance to Tobramycine, whereas the strains that does not produce GSBL had no resistance, to these antibiotics; but for Gentamicine, in GSBL producing strains 45% and non produce in 13% resistance were detected.For Sefalosporin antibiotics in GSBL producing strains, were 83%, resistant to Ceftazidime and the strains that do not produce GSBL were 20% resistant. For Ceftriaxona the resistance rote in GSBL producers were 90%, but in non produce is 23% resistance.For Karbepenemes, in GSBL producing strains, were resistant to ertapeneme 46%, strains that do not produce GSBL were 15% resistant.Also for, Imipenem and Meropeneme GSBL producing strains were 34% resistant to both antibiotics, but the ratio in non produce is were only 9% resistance.In this study, 55% GSBL existence was detected in Klebsiella strains. The most common samples were enroled from Anesthesia Intense Care Unit (44%), and the highest GSBL positivity was determined on the samples from Chest Diseases and Neurosurgery wards (71%). And the highest GSBL isolate containing clinic sample was tracheal aspirate.It is concluded that the Klebsiella strains that produce GSBL, have much more resistance to antibiotics than the other isolates. Therfore such wind of strains must be monitorized carefully, particularly in intensive care units and the precautions for prevention had to be implemented.
