Abstract (EN)
Sodium hypocloride and hydrocloric acid, more commonly known as ?bleaching agent? respectively are used as cleaning agents traditionally. As a result of mixing these two gases, chlorine (Cl2) gas is formed. Cl2 gas is an oxidizing agent which is also used in industry. Therefore, occupational intoxications are also seen frequently in our country. Cl2 gas intoxications are one of the most frequent causes of emergency cases. The main approach for treatment of these cases is the symptomatic and supportive therapy. Unfortunately, no known acceptable treatment approach is present to reduce the damage of the lungs at the moment.In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of Magnesium Sulphate to reduce and/or neutralize the syptomps and the damage caused by the intoxications which occur depending on Cl2 gas inhalation.Rats were divided into five groups randomly each consisiting of 8 excepting for 6 rats in sham group. The rats in ?sham group? were given nothing during the experiments. Cl2 gas was obtained commercially. The rats in the other four groups were subjected to Cl2 gas inhalation of 200 ppm for 20 minutes prepared in the anasthesia chamber specifically. Among these, the rats in group III and group V intraperitoneal Magnesium Sulphate as 100 mg/kg was given intraperitoneally, while equal amounts of SF was given intraperitoneal to the rats in groups II and IV. The rats in group II and III were followed up for 6 hours, whereas this period for the rats in group I, IV and V were 24 hours. During these periods, the rats were permitted to have food orally. At the end of these periods (6th and 24th hours) the surgical procedure were carried out. Blood sample was taken from each sacrified rat and lung tissues were taken out for biochemical analyses in tissue level.Following Cl2 gas intoxications, MDA, GSH, Ascorbic Asit, TNF-? and IL-10 in blood, and MDA and GSH in tissue were studied in rats. While no significant increase in MDA levels were detected in group II, a statistically significant increase in MDA levels was observed in other groups. GSH levels increased significantly in group II, though not statistically significant in other groups, probably due to an adaptive response to oxidative stress. No significant effect of treatment on Ascorbic Acid was seen. Also, the treatment had no significant effect on MDA and GSH of lung tissue. On the other hand, it was observed that the treatment had a much more positive response to oxidation in early phase. It was also seen that the treatment had a statistically insignificant effect on IL-10 during inflammative process in group II, whereas it was significant in other groups. Moreover, no statistically significant effect of the treatment was seen on TNF-?. It was also seen that the treatment might have had a more positive effect on inflammation in late phase.In conclusion, following the Cl2 gas exposition, it has been seen that Magnesium Sulphate might have had a positive effect on reversing oxidative stres in early phase, and on inflammative response in late phase for treatment, despite the fact that it is not statistically significant.Key Words: Chlorine gas, Magnesium sulphate, Rat
