The effect of training provided with the teach back teqnique to individuals with COPD on inhaler medication compliance

Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted with a pre-test post-test controlled randomized experimental intervention to evaluate the inhaler medication compliance of the education given with the Teach Back Teqnique to patients diagnosed with COPD and using inhaler medications. The study sample consists of 172 patients who met the research criteria and applied to the Chest Diseases and Internal Medicine outpatient clinics of Ankara Bilkent City Hospital. The research was conducted between 01.02.2023 and 30.04.2023 using the Sociodemographic Data Form, Inhaler Drug Use Skill Chart and Morisky Compliance Scale. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics V23 and AMOS package program. The significance level was accepted as p < 0.05. Of the individuals participating in the study, 57% are men and 43% are women, 49.99% are between the ages of 61-78 and 84.9% state that they are not currently working. 27.9% of the patients were diagnosed with COPD within 5-10 years, 39% reported using inhaler medications routinely, 29.7% reported using inhaler medications for 1-5 years, and 53.5% had used inhaler medications before. , 41.9% reported that they changed their inhaler medication upon the doctor's recommendation. There is a statistically significant difference from Pre-Test to Post-Test in the use of metered dose inhaler, Diskus and Inhalation capsule (p<0.05). It is seen that the average scores of all participants increased from pre-test to post-test. It is seen that the average scores obtained from the Easyhaler and Turbuhaler usage scale have increased. This difference is not statistically significant (p>0.05). There is a statistically significant difference in the answers given to the Morisky-8 Treatment Compliance Scale from Pre-Test to Post-Test (p<0.05). As a result, it seems that inhaler medication education can be given to patients using inhaler medications using Teach Back Teqnique.
