Abstract (EN)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a slightly reversible and progressive systemic disease that is characterized by chronic airflow limitation, is caused by proteinase / antiproteinase imbalance and oxidative stress, and can exacerbate the severity due to extrapulmonary factors. This study was aimed to investigate the relationship between serum levels of YKL-40 and NT-proBNP and oxidant status in COPD so as to determine the inflammation in COPD exacerbation and cardiovascular diseases co-existing with COPD. 37 patients followed up by the diagnosis of acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as experimental group and 21 age- and sex-matched patients with COPD ones as a control group were included in our study. 5 ml of blood were drawn twice from patients with COPD during the period of stable and acute exacerbation and once from patients in control group. Serum levels of hs-CRP, YKL-40, NT-proBNP, NO•, TAS, TOS and MDA levels were measured. Pulmonary function test was made for all groups. Compared pulmonary function parameters of all COPD patients with control group ones, it was found that average values of FEV1, FVC and FEV1/FVC were significantly lower in patients with COPD than in the control one (p<0.001 for all three parameters). It was observed that serum levels of hs-CRP, YKL-40, NT-ProBNP, MDA, NO͘ and TOS reached to higher levels in patients with COPD than in the control group. It was found that there was a significant decrease in the patients with COPD compared to the control group (p <0.001 for COPD at first day, p<0.05 for total COPD). It was observed that there were no significant differences between TAS levels on 15 days after the treatment and TAS ones of the control group (p>0.05). It has been concluded that a simultaneous increase in the levels of YKL-40 and NT-proBNP in patients with COPD may be an indication of oxidative stress and inflammation in the lungs, and that cardiovascular diseases may coexist with COPD. Key Words: COPD, YKL-40, NT-proBNP
