Özet (EN)
In this study, 545 Byzantine coins in the Kocaeli Museum were investigated. Since the Kingdom of Bithynia, Kocaeli has been home to Roman, Byzantine, Anatolian Seljuk and Ottoman Empire. The city is the bridge between the East and the West. The Balkan peninsula is the connection point on the sea and road routes to the Greek islands, Central Europe, North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean countries. In our country where contemporary museum activities have gained importance in recent years, it has been determined that the coins in this museum in the historical, political and economic aspects of the work carried out in the Kocaeli Museum, consist of examples that reflect the commercial connections in the region in terms of numismatics. The Nicomedia mint, which was located in the city during the Byzantine Empire, is one of the important mints of the empire in the Early Byzantine period. The Byzantine coin of the 545 Byzantine coins in the Kocaeli Museum collection includes 9 gold, 1 electron, 1 silver, 16 billion and 518 bronze. In the study, the Early Byzantine coins in the museum collection were compared with the findings of the museums and excavations of the provinces close to the boundaries of the Bithynia region and the coin circulation in the Empire was examined. In addition, it was compared with the findings of the museum and the excavations in Bithynia region.
