Investigation of the relationship between religious coping styles and hopelessness in patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery

Abstract (EN)
Aim: This descriptive relational study was conducted to investigate the relationship between religious coping styles and hopelessness levels of patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery. Material and method: The population of the study consisted of patients who underwent colorectal cancer surgery in the general surgery service of İnönü University Turgut Özal Medical Center, and the sample consisted of 113 patients who met the inclusion criteria of the study. The data in the research conducted between June 2020 and January 2023; Personal Information Form was collected with Beck Hopelessness Scale and Religious Coping Styles Scale. The SPSS 26 package programs were used to evaluate the data. Results: 48.67% of the patients participating in the study were over 64 years old and 63.70% were male. As a result of the research, the median score of positive religious coping style was determined as 23.0, median score of negative religious coping style was 10.0, and median score of Beck Hopeless Scale was determined as 5. As a result of the research, a moderate negative correlation was found between the Beck Hopelessness Scale mean score and the positive religious coping style sub-dimension mean score(r:-0.49), and a positive moderate relationship was found between the Beck Hopelessness Scale and the negative religious coping style sub-dimension mean score(r:0.51). Conclusion: It was observed that as the positive religious coping style score of the patients participating in the study increased, the level of hopelessness decreased. The results of the research show that religious coping styles affect the level of hopelessness. Key Words: Religious coping, Nurse, Colorectal cancer, Hopelessness
