Evaluation of homocysteine levels variations in patients with colerectal cancer

Homocysteine is an amino acid that plays an important role in health and disease. Cancer, a disease with a high risk of death and danger, is a serious risk factor for all humanity worldwide, so it is necessary to study the scientific researches on cancer intensively. It is also known that there is a relationship between homocysteine levels and the clinical pathological parameters of patients. In this study, we aim to achievenew data on the diversity of Homocysteine in patients suffered from colorectal cancer in Turkey. In this context, patients with colorectal cancer and healthy control group were selected from the same socioeconomic group and with similer age-gender distributions. Homocysteine levels were determined among thirty one patients with CRC and twenty two healthy controls. There was no significant age difference between the cases (63,32 ± 2,10 years) and the controls (56,2 ±3,07years) (p=0.053). Also, among of CRC and control groups' characteristics regarding age, gender, and clinicopathological parameters (tumor location, tumor stage, lymph nodal metastasis, distance metastasis, perineural invasion, the presence of mucinous component) were no significant. The homocysteine levels of the CRC group were higher than the control group. This result supports that high homocysteine levels are associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer. When the pathologic parameters of CRC (n = 31) and control groups (n = 22) were compared, it was observed that the homocysteine levels of the CRC group (12.51 ± 2.02) were higher than the control group (8.02 ± 0.18) (p = 0.042). Although homocysteine levels were not significantly different (p> 0.05) for all pathological parameters of both groups, homocysteine levels were found to be slightly higher in patients with mucinous component, but this was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). The results obtained here should be verified by working with a larger sample. At the same time, further studies with larger numbers of patients are needed to evaluate the data of plasma Hcy levels in colorectal cancer.
