Abstract (EN)

Objective: To examine the effect of the Standard Ostomy Self-care program on peristomal skin complications and quality of life in patients with colorectal cancer who underwent ostomy creation. Method: A single blind quasi-experimental study. Sixty-seven participants were recruited the study. Standard Ostomy Care program was applied to the patients in the intervention group (n=33). Patients in the control group (n=35) were trained in accordance with the hospital's procedure. Data were obtained by completing the Peristomal Skin Tool and Stoma Quality of Life scale at 7 days, 2, 6 and 12 weeks after ostomy creation. Chi-square test, independent-samples t tests, paired t test, Friedman test and repeated measures variance analysis were used to evaluate the data. Findings: Patients in the Standard Ostomy Care program had less peristomal irritant dermatitis at 2, 6, and 12 weeks post-operatively compared to the control group (respectively; 27.3% vs. 51.4%, 27.3% vs. 65.7%, 15.2% vs. 37.1%; p <.05). The Discoloration, Erosion, Tissue Growth score of the control group was higher in the 6th week compared to the intervention (p = .011). There was an increase in the quality of life (p = .000) in patients in both groups over time, however the quality of life in the intervention group increased more than the control group (p = .000). Result: This study developed a feasible and effective multi-component stoma care program. The Standard Ostomy Care program reduced peristomal skin complications and improved stoma quality of life in stoma patients with colorectal cancer.
